Who we are!

Welcome to Grand Environmental!

For over 30 years, Grand Environmental has been a steadfast advocate for the natural beauty and watershed health of the Colorado River headwaters in Grand County, Colorado. Rooted in a passion for sustainability and conservation, we take a broad view that incorporates earth science, ecological restoration, and permaculture design. Our mission is to provide innovative, sustainable solutions that work in harmony with nature, ensuring a brighter, healthier future for our community and the environment.

Permaculture Design — Building on a background in traditional natural resource management, we’re focusing our efforts on low-tech, cost-effective permaculture design to better cultivate sustainable and regenerative systems that promote natural ecosystems. By integrating land, water, plants, and human needs into a cohesive design, we help landowners and communities promote resilient landscapes that thrive with natural resilience.

Watershed Restoration — Our broad perspective and holistic approach takes in our watershed setting to support local ecosystems, agriculture, and communities. Our team employs a combination of modern techniques and traditional ecological knowledge to restore degraded watersheds, enhance water quality, and stabilize riverbanks. By addressing issues such as erosion, sedimentation, and habitat loss, we contribute to resilient water systems that sustain both wildlife and human activity.

In region increasingly affected by wildfire, wildland fire rehabilitation and reforesting have become the heart of what we do. We understand the lasting impacts of wildfires on both ecosystems and communities, and we’re committed to helping landscapes heal. Using cutting-edge techniques and a deep understanding of local ecosystems, we work to restore balance, rebuild forests, and promote long-term environmental resilience.

Landscape and Water Resource Surveys — All our work is built upon a strong baseline foundation informed by landscape and water resource surveys. Blending field observations documented with GPS location and cloud-based surveys with the increasing wealth of AI-friendly natural resource databases, all our mapping is generated in GIS to offer in-depth analyses to help clients understand the unique characteristics of their land and waters. From evaluating soil quality and terrain to assessing water availability and runoff patterns, we equip landowners with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. These surveys are a critical foundation for projects ranging from agricultural development to ecological restoration, ensuring long-term success while conserving precious resources.

Small, Local Business — Beyond our professional mission, our work is deeply personal. Grand Environmental is a small, family-run company, and we’ve called Grand County home for more than three decades. Founders Geoff and Kate Elliott raised two boys here in local schools. Isaac and Sammy Elliott grew up exploring the lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains of this remarkable region, learning firsthand the value of preserving its natural beauty. Kate runs a seasonal coffee shop on Grand Lake, serving as a local community hub space for locals and visitors to connect over a great cup of coffee. Adding to the family are our loyal dogs who are always ready to join fieldwork adventures, embodying the spirit of teamwork and connection to the land.

Whether you’re restoring ecosystems, addressing water resource challenges, or creating sustainable designs, we’re here to provide solutions tailored to your needs.

At Grand Environmental, we’re more than just a company—we’re a family rooted in this land and its community. We are honored to be your trusted partner in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty and ecological health of Grand County for generations to come.
